Pune: Now the students of BJ General Medical College (BJGMC) will get a chance to practice emergency medicine with the help of high-tech medical simulation facility. A state of the art ‘Emergency Medicine Patient Simulation Lab’ was set up at BJGMC and Sassoon General Hospital (SGH) through the Member of Parliament (MP) fund of MP Anil Shirole. It was inaugurated on Thursday.

The cost of setting up this simulation lab was Rs 2.25 crore. The simulation equipment was procured by Laerdal Medical, based in Norway. This is the first of its kind simulation lab in Maharashtra that is set up in a government hospital.

The facility was inaugurated by MP Anil Shirole. BJGMC Dean Dr Muralidhar Tambe, SGH Medical Superintendent Dr Ajay Taware, HOD of Department of Anesthesia Dr Vidya Kelkar, Dr Maya Jamkar and 
representatives of ‘Laerdal’.
 
The lab is set up at Anesthesia Department. The lab mainly consists of two types of simulation mannequins for basic and advanced practices. In the basic simulation, medical and nursing students practice treatments like putting air tube in the patient’s respiratory system. The mannequin gives alert when the tube is by mistake goes in the food pipe of the patient. The similar alerts are generated if there is some mistake happened while injecting intravenous fluid to the patient. Doctors from BJGMC also presented a demo of this simulation equipment.

Speaking on the occasion, Anil Shirole said that he is glad to provide the related funds for healthcare.

“Highest international standards are maintained while establishing this project. The lab will not only facilitate the advanced training for medical students, but it will help raise the quality of service at the tertiary hospital by identifying service gaps in providing emergency medical care,” said Shirole.
