PUNE: A rare case of an abdominal tumour in an 8-year-old girl was accidentally diagnosed while her mother was giving her a bath. The young girl did not have any other symptoms like pain. However, the tumour was affecting the kidneys due to back pressure. Doctors at a Jehangir Hospital said that the during the surgery, they found that the tumour was an ovarian mass. They were also surprised at the child had symptoms of precocious puberty which she did not inform anyone about.

Speaking to Sakal Times, Dr Dasmit Singh, paediatric surgeon from Jehangir Hospital who treated the young girl, said that the ovarian mass is very rare among children. “We see such ovarian mass among grown up women. We hardly get such a case of a child may be once a year and so this case is rare,” said Singh. He further added that the CT scan showed high marker of alpha feto-protein and Beta HCG which means there was a tumour. “This tumour was also affecting the young girl’s kidneys due to back pressure of the large tumour,” said Singh. Explaining the condition of the girl, Singh said that the young girl had precocious puberty symptoms, that is early onset of puberty, which she did not inform anyone about.

“There were no other symptoms in the girl. During the surgery when she was under anaesthesia, we saw that the tumour was behind the intestine and was mobile,” said Singh. 

After the surgery, the test reports of histopathology showed mixed ovarian tumour marker and the post-surgery tumour marker was low. He further added that long term follow up is important to make sure there is no recurrence.
