Monsoon revival throws life out of gear across State

Sakal Times

Pune: After a brief lull, most parts of Maharashtra experienced a fresh spell of rain in the last two days. On Sunday, Pune recorded 44.2 mm rainfall.

Almost all parts of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad have been receiving light to moderate showers since Saturday morning.

Water logging was reported in many low-lying areas of the city like Baner, Balewadi, Hadapsar (near Ramtekdi Railway Crossing), Fatima Nagar, Shaniwarwada and Law College Road, while in Pimpri-Chinchwad areas like Vallabhnagar and Chinchwad bus stop were affected.

Electricity supply in some parts, like Kondhwa and Kothrud, was affected due to heavy rain.

In Mumbai and adjoining areas, heavy overnight rains caused water logging in several low-lying areas, resulting in slow movement of rail and vehicular traffic.

Many spots across the metropolis, including Hindmata in Dadar, Sion, Matunga, and some parts in Andheri were waterlogged due to the incessant showers leading to traffic snarls and chaos.

According to officials of the civic body, continuous rain spells had uprooted trees at 22 places across the city, but no human casualty had been reported.

According to BMC Deputy Municipal Commissioner (General Administration) Sudhir Naik, the disaster management team is keeping tabs on the situation. The civic body’s preparatory forces are in place to tackle any eventualities.

Earlier, the Pune-based India Meteorological Department (IMD) had noted deficient rainfall in Vidarbha and Marathwada. However, from Saturday evening all these regions are reported to be receiving good rainfall, giving a respite to farmers.

According to IMD forecast, rainfall will continue in the coming 2-3 days in regions like Vidarbha, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada and Konkan and Goa.

Between June 1 till August 20, Pune received 412.2 mm rainfall - more than the normal mark of 405.8 mm.

IMD also noted that heavy rain occurred at isolated places over Konkan and Goa, Marathwada, Telangana, Coastal Karnataka, north Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Arunachal Pradesh on Sunday throughout the day. Along with that thunderstorm occurred at isolated places over Marathawada, Gujarat region, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal on Sunday.
