Monsoon update: Pune to receive heavy rainfall, weather department issues orange alert

Pune: Heavy rainfall is expected in Pune city and its neighbouring areas on Wednesday as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned an ‘Orange Alert’ on Tuesday. The department informed that an 'Orange Alert' has been issued in the city as the rains are expected to intensify in the ghat section too. The department also said that landslides would occur in hilly areas.

The city and surrounding areas have been experiencing heavy rainfall from Monday night. The rainfall had continued on Tuesday also.

Moderate rainfall (15.6 to 64.4 mm) is expected in the next 24 hours in some parts of the city and its surroundings. At the same time, the intensity of rain will increase in isolated places. The meteorological department, however, warned of torrential to very heavy rains in the ghat areas of Pune. There will be more than 205 millimetres of rain, states the Meteorological Department.

Earlier on Monday, the IMD predicted heavy rains in many districts of Maharashtra including, Mumbai, Sindhudurg, Raigad, Palghar this week. The weather department also notified rains to hit in many parts of the state such as Pune, Aurangabad, Beed, Osmanabad, Hingoli, Solapur and more.

Meanwhile, Mumbai on Tuesday witnessed 230 mm of rainfall in 10 hours.
