PUNE: The city once known as the pensioners’ paradise has changed over the years. As per the crime statistics released by Pune city police, out of 467 cases filed by senior citizens, 258 were related to mental and physical harassment, 54 related to properties and 43 related to cheating. Police officials said most complaints were against close relatives.

According to the police officials, dedicated teams have been formed at the police station-level to visit senior citizens in their jurisdiction and resolve their issues. As per the latest information, the police have maintained a database of 18,000 senior citizens and have issued them identity cards.

The newly-formed Bharosa Cell (Cops Hub), which became functional at the police commissioner’s office from January 9 this year, is also looking into the grievances of the elderly persons.

DCP (Crime) Shirish Sardeshpande said most complaints of the senior citizens have been resolved. “In 2018, there were 467, out of which 458 cases were resolved by the senior citizens’ cell. Many cases are not related to the police. We forward them to the concerned department and also do a follow-up,” he added.
