Nothing to worry about polio vaccine: Officials

ST CORRESPONDENT

PUNE: Following the emergence of concerns related to contamination of polio vaccine with type-2 polio vaccine strain in Uttar Pradesh, information by the health ministry also suggested that this vaccine was also circulated in two other states, namely, Maharashtra, Telangana besides UP. However, officials from the Family Welfare Bureau of Maharashtra on Thursday said there is nothing to worry about.

Speaking to Sakal Times, Dr Dilip Patil, Deputy Director, Vaccines, State Family Welfare Bureau, said parents should not worry as everything is under surveillance.

“In a letter issued to us by the Central government, they have confirmed that Maharashtra has not got the vaccine, which was there in UP. There has been no supply of type-2 doses here. Certainly, there is no supply of the contaminated vaccine in the State. There should be a misconception about this and no panic as well among parents,” said Dr Patil.

He clarified that the situation in UP was that children were administered type 2 vaccine. “However, type-2 has been eradicated worldwide. Hence, there is no need to worry. Even if it was there, it will not harm children as the content of the vaccine is good. What we administer children is vaccines for P1 and P3,” said Dr Patil.
