Pune: The State government has suggested to all educational institutions to observe a ‘Gadget Free Day’ once every month so that students get involved in reading activities. This was mentioned in a State government resolution directing institutions to follow ‘Wachan Prerna Day’ on the occasion of former president APJ Abdul Kalam’s birth anniversary on October 15.

“This will be a symbolic change. Awareness will be created slowly and may be students will realise that they can stay away from gadgets,” said Principal of Modern College of Arts, Science and Commerce Rajendra Zunjarrao.

Psychologists have also claimed that youngsters are trapped in a rapid digital era and have lost the essence of real time moments. “This will prove to be a great mental repose session for youngsters who are usually pre-occupied with gadgets. These habits generally brings more anxiety and hypertension,” said city-based psychologist Prajakta Deshpande.

“By practicing a day off from gadgets, they can experience being away from mobile phones and laptops. Instead, they can use their time in productive works like reading, playing, physically communicating etc,” added Deshpande.
