Pune: Drawing inspiration from the state of Tamil Nadu, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will be providing a baby kit from this year.
The PMC’s Health Department will provide free baby kits to parents of newborn babies. The Standing Committee approved Rs 41 lakh for the scheme on Tuesday.
Yogesh Mulik, Chairman of Standing Committee said, “We have passed a tender for providing baby kits to the parents of newborn babies. We have approved Rs 41 lakh for this. One kit will cost Rs 504.”
The purpose is to promote hygiene and sanitation among mothers and newborns. It will help in development of the infants. It will also help in giving a feel-good factor for the mother and help the family tide over the first few days after the birth. Most of the families come from a poor financial background, hence they face a tough time buying diapers for the baby.
Pune city has two major state-run hospitals, Sassoon General Hospital and Aundh General Hospital. Out of that, the PMC has three major hospitals - Kamla Nehru Hospital in Mangalwar Peth, Naidu Hospital near Pune railway station and Rajiv Gandhi Hospital in Yerawada and 15 maternity homes in parts of the city.

The Standing Committee has approved proposals to make a Detailed Project Report (DPR) of extension of Metro route from Paud flyover to Warje-Shivane, e-library in Sahakar Nagar area, Freedom Fighter Museum in Nana Wada and health mid-day meal to PMC Krida Niketan schools and e-learning school students.
