Pune, 25th May 2026: Parking crisis on Jungli Maharaj Road may get worse, as the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is now considering demolishing the multi-level mechanical parking facility near Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Garden.
The parking facility was constructed by PMC in 2006-07 at a cost of several crores to reduce traffic congestion and parking issues on the busy JM Road stretch. However, the project failed to attract enough users over the years. Poor maintenance and lack of timely repairs eventually led to the parking system becoming non-functional.
As parking problems on Jungli Maharaj Road increased in recent months, discussions regarding restarting the facility gained momentum once again. PMC officials and representatives from MahaMetro had conducted inspections and meetings to explore the possibility of reviving the project.
According to the proposal, MahaMetro was expected to redevelop and operate the parking facility while sharing 80 percent of the profits with PMC. However, the agency assigned to inspect the structure later submitted a report stating that repair work would cost around ₹2 crore.
After reviewing the report, PMC concluded that even after repairs, the facility would not be suitable for modern vehicles and would fail to provide a long-term solution to the parking issue.
“The parking facility has become outdated and is no longer suitable for newer vehicles. Even after spending heavily on repairs, the parking issue is unlikely to be resolved. Hence, PMC is considering demolishing the structure,” said Dinkar Gojare, head of PMC’s Special Projects Department.
