Police arrest three Gawli gang members in extortion case

Pune: The local crime branch (LCB) of Pune rural police has arrested three persons and booked two others of the Daddy alias Arun Gawli gang for allegedly demanding Rs five lakh extortion money from a businessman.

An FIR has been registered with Manchar police station. The arrested persons have been identified as Mobin Mehmood Mujawar, a resident of Dagdi Chawl in Byculla, Mumbai, who is a native of Vadgaon Peer in Ambegaon taluka of Pune district, Suraj Rajesh Yadav, also from Vadgaon Peer and Bala Sudam Pathare of Chandan Nagar. Those booked are a woman called ‘Mummy’ and one Yadav’s accomplice.

According to the police, Mujawar is son of Gawli’s wife’s brother. Mujawar and Yadav had threatened to kill the businessman if the extortion money was not paid. Pathare went to the businessman’s shop in Wagholi and threatened his staff. They also made the businessman speak with the woman on phone and again demanded money. Fed up with the harassment, he lodged a complaint with Manchar police station. 

Considering the seriousness of the case, Superintendent of Police Suvez Haque transferred the investigation to LCB led by Police Inspector Dayanand Gawde. Accordingly, Mujawar, Yadav and Pathare were arrested. They are members of Gavli gang and Mujawar works as a personal assistant of Asha Arun Gawli, the police said.
