Pune, 8th June 2026: Monsoon is yet to arrive and water storage in the Khaskwasla dam project is steadily declining, the possibility of water cuts has emerged in the city, prompting civic authorities to consider rationing measures.
The Pune Municipal Corporation's (PMC) water supply department has submitted a proposal to the Municipal Commissioner recommending alternate-day water supply across the city.
The proposal aims to conserve available water and ensure that Pune's drinking water needs are met in the coming months if rainfall remains below expectations.
According to officials, the Khadakwasla dam project currently holds only 18.79 per cent of its total water storage. The available water must be used for both drinking and irrigation purposes, increasing pressure on the limited reserves.
Authorities are also closely monitoring weather conditions. Forecasts indicate that the region could receive below-normal rainfall between June and September, raising concerns about a potential water shortage if reservoir levels do not improve significantly.
Mayor Manjusha Nagpure said that no final decision has been taken yet on implementing water cuts. She stated that the issue will be discussed in a meeting involving party leaders, elected representatives, the Municipal Commissioner, and senior officials.
The meeting is expected to take place today or tomorrow, after which a final decision on water rationing will be announced.
Civic officials maintain that any decision will be taken with the objective of safeguarding Pune's drinking water supply until sufficient monsoon rainfall replenishes reservoir levels.
