Pune, 18th July 2026: The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the licences of 10 food establishments, including the well-known Golden Bakery in Kondhwa, after inspections uncovered unhygienic conditions and violations of the Food Safety and Standards Act.
The action followed inspections carried out on July 16 and 17 across Pune and other districts in the division. Officials found several establishments preparing and storing food in unhygienic conditions, prompting immediate suspension of their licences.
The FDA also released photographs from the inspections, highlighting poor sanitation and unsafe food handling practices at the affected premises.
The suspended establishments in Pune include:
Star Catering Service, Mangalwar Peth
Ashok Bar and Restaurant, Somwar Peth
Golden Majestic Bakery, Yewalewadi
Golden Bakery, Kondhwa
Bikange Biryani LLP, Baner
Outside Pune, action was taken against:
Siddharth Agro Dairy, Pargaon Peth (Ambegaon)
Hald Bhavan Canteen, Sangli
Sahyadri Restaurant and Dhaba, Mahabaleshwar
Sigdi Restaurant, Mahabaleshwar
VBGOR School Canteen, Gadmudshingi, Kolhapur district
Officials said inspections found that these establishments failed to maintain basic hygiene and food safety standards.
In a separate action, the FDA suspended the registration of R.A.T. Enterprises, a franchise outlet in Lohgaon, for allegedly misleading customers by selling 'Bun Maska' prepared with vegetable fat spread instead of butter.
During the inspection, officials found that the outlet was using Nutralite Professional Vegetable Fat Spread while marketing the product as 'Bun Maska' without informing customers. The FDA said this created a false impression that butter was being used and amounted to misleading consumers.
FDA Joint Commissioner (Food) Digambar Bhogawade directed food business operators to strictly follow food safety regulations. He said establishments must:
Provide free safe drinking water to customers.
Use only food-grade packaging materials.
Operate with valid licences.
Avoid reusing cooking oil.
Clearly disclose ingredients used in food preparation.
He also warned that strict action would be taken against businesses found using substitutes such as fat spread instead of butter, paneer analogue instead of paneer, or synthetic food colours without proper disclosure.
Consumers can report complaints related to food quality or hygiene by calling the FDA's toll-free helpline 1800-222-365.
