The Southwest monsoon made its impact over Pune district on Friday, passing moderate rainfall over remote areas. For the second successive day, the monsoon progressed through Maharashtra and some parts of the Vidarbha, Marathwada and Central Maharashtra.

The Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) on Friday passed through Baramati, Harnai, Beed in the state, along with Siliguri, Raipur and Sambalpur, upholding its slow advance this season so far.

Officials at India Meteorological Department (IMD) have predicted moderate to heavy rainfall in Pune district for the next four days especially in Ghat areas. This will be under the influence of a low-pressure belt that lay close to coastal states of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.

A low to moderate rainfall was recorded in the city, which witnessed overcast sky conditions. According to reports, the rainfall intensity will gear up in the next 48 hours. The weather department has said that the monsoon will further develop in the remaining parts of the state, including Mumbai.

PMC PREPARED TO BATTLE MONSOON

Pune last year witnessed flash floods which caused the destruction of many properties living over 25 families homeless. The flash floods also took lives last year. Areas such as Ambil Odha, Sinhagad Road, Parvati and Satara Road were the worst-affected as water from nullahs oozed onto roads and houses in those low-lying areas.

PMC (Pune Municipal Corporation) this year is extra cautious. The civic administration is gearing up to avoid a flood-like situation.

Pune Mayor Murlidhar Mohol and Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Gaikwad recently paid a visit to the areas in the city which were hit by the floods. The civic authorities have been asked to work accordingly They have been asked to remove the trees which are on the road of natural streams and eliminate the sludge blocking culvert on nullahs.
