Pune, 18th July 2026: An 18-year-old student allegedly died by suicide at her residence in Mohammadwadi, Hadapsar, a day after the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) results were declared. The deceased has been identified as Anushka Ashish Chougule, a resident of Saffron Hill Society.
Police have registered an accidental death case at Kalepadal Police Station and have begun an investigation into the incident.
According to police, the NEET results were announced on Thursday evening. On Friday morning, Anushka's father had left for work and her younger brother had gone to school. While her mother was busy with household chores, Anushka locked herself inside her room.
When she did not respond despite repeated calls, her mother unlocked the door using a spare key and found her hanging. She was declared dead after the incident came to light.
Police suspect that Anushka may have taken the extreme step after checking her NEET result. However, officials said the exact reason behind her death has not yet been established.
Investigators found no suicide note, and Anushka did not own a personal mobile phone, leaving no immediate clues about her state of mind. Senior Police Inspector Girisha Nimbalkar visited the scene, and further investigation is in progress.
