Pune: Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) is planning to colour-code its buses to make it easier for commuters to identify the route. The local transport utility will use QR codes to deliver all information about its bus operations and services to passengers, officials said.

The PMPML has named the initiative as CARISMA (Colour coding All Routes to Identify and Simplify Maps and App) for 140 routes in the city. The PMPML will be coding using 15 different colours. Buses functioning on these routes will display the corresponding colours. Among the colours under for this project are pink, black, red, violet, peacock, blue, green, sky blue, green, ochre, moss green, grey and khakhi. PMPML is also set to become India’s first public bus service to use QR and colour codes.

Information about routes and their nearest bus stop can be obtained by using QR codes, which can be scanned using a suitable mobile application. The codes will be fixed on bus stops, bus depots and inside the buses.

Rajendra Jagtap, Chairman and Managing Director, Chetna Kerure, Joint Managing Director, Dattatray Zende, Traffic Superintendent were present during the briefing. According to reports, colour codes have been glued on over 1,200 buses.

The 53 buses operating under the ATAL (Aligning Transit on All Lanes) scheme, which was launched in October, already has the orange colour code and the airport service will be pasted in pink.
