Pune 12th June 2025: In response to a troubling surge in fatal road accidents involving heavy vehicles, the Pune Police have announced a strict enforcement campaign targeting dumpers, trucks, and cement mixers operating within city limits. Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar stated on Wednesday (11th June) that vehicles linked to serious accidents over the past five years will be identified and seized. Additionally, the driving licences of the involved operators will be cancelled.

This announcement comes in the wake of a tragic accident at Gangadham Chowk in the Market Yard area, where a woman named Deepali Soni died after a two-wheeler she was riding pillion on was struck by a truck. Her father-in-law, who was driving the vehicle, sustained serious injuries. The incident has intensified public outrage and renewed calls for stricter traffic regulation.

Commissioner Kumar expressed concern over the repeated violations of traffic norms by drivers of heavy vehicles, despite existing restrictions on their movement along key city routes. He noted that such disregard for rules is not only contributing to severe traffic congestion but is also a leading factor behind the alarming rise in road fatalities across Pune.

According to official police data, Pune recorded 334 fatal accidents in 2023, resulting in 345 deaths. In just the first five months of 2024 alone, 133 people have already lost their lives in road accidents. These figures underscore the urgency of taking decisive action to improve road safety.

As part of the crackdown, police will take legal action against violators, including seizing non-compliant vehicles, revoking licences, and initiating court proceedings. The Traffic Department is working in coordination with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to streamline traffic movement, while authorities have also appealed to the public to strictly follow traffic rules to ensure the safety of all road users.
