Pune: Police raid gambling den, man jumps of second floor of building to evade action, dies

Pune: Warje Malwadi police raided a gambling den being operated at a building on Friday evening and arrested four persons from the spot. A man, trying to evade police action, jumped off the second floor of the building but died later due to the serious injuries he received.

The deceased has been identified as Zakir Pathan (48), a resident of Gokhale Nagar. Police have registered a case of accidental death in this regard. A separate case has been registered at the Warje police station against the suspects on gambling charges.

According to police, the gambling was taking place in a building in Tapodhan area at Jijai Garden in Warje Malwadi area. This information was received by the Warje Malwadi Police Station officer in charge, Machhindra Pandit. He confirmed the tipoff received. Pandit and his team raided the spot on Friday evening at around 7 pm where some people were found gambling.

The gambling den operators had asked some persons to stay on the second floor of the building. But fearing police action, Pathan jumped off the second floor and was seriously injured in the incident. He was rushed to a hospital by police staff and others. But he succumbed to the injuries. While Pathan was being taken to hospital, several others at the spot took undue advantage of the chaos and fled from the spot.

Seniors kept in the dark

The operator of this gambling den is also known to operate a betting racket and always changes his location or operations. Some people in the police station were aware of this, but these police personnel kept their superiors in the dark. There were several people at the gambling den but they were let away. Police have arrested only four persons on the spot in connection with the incident, while the two main operators managed to give a slip to the police.
