Pune Crime: Dispute During Ram Navami Procession Turn Violent; Youth Injured in Blade Attack

Banner dispute escalates into late-night assault in Ghorpadi–Mundhwa area; victim sustains over 70 stitches; Police have registered a case against multiple accused

Pune, 30 March 2026: A shocking incident of violence has surfaced from Pune’s Ghorpadi area, where a dispute during a Ram Navami procession led to a brutal late-night attack on a group of youths.

Ajinkya Gawali, who filed the complaint, stated that the conflict began over the placement of banners during the religious procession on March 26.

According to police, the argument initially turned into a scuffle around 8:30 pm near BT Kawade Road. Although the situation seemed to settle briefly, tensions flared up again later in the night.

Around 11 pm, Ajinkya Gawali, his brother Akshay Gawali, and their friends were allegedly attacked in the Jadhav Vasti area of Mundhwa.

The accused, identified as Kashiram Moghe, Abhishek Moghe, Nandu Thorat, and three others, allegedly assaulted the group with sharp weapons and sticks. Akshay Gawali suffered multiple stab injuries to his head, abdomen, hands, and legs. Friends who tried to intervene were also beaten.

Akshay was first rushed to Sassoon General Hospital for emergency treatment and later shifted to KEM Hospital Pune. Doctors confirmed that he sustained severe injuries requiring more than 70 stitches, and his condition remains critical.

Police have registered a case at Mundhwa Police Station and launched an investigation. The incident has raised concerns among residents, as violence during a religious festival has created an atmosphere of fear in the area.
