Pune: The city has been classified under the red zone due to the spread of the coronavirus. The regional transport office (RTO) of Pune has declared that only new vehicles will be registered at this stage.

The registration of new vehicles began on May 18. RTO in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad made an all-out income of around Rs 43.79 lakh the same day by registering new vehicles.

A senior RTO official told TOI, "On Monday, the Pune RTO registered 27 new bikes and 24 cars with BSVI engines. The total revenue earned was Rs 32.44 lakh. The registration of vehicles, which started on Monday after almost two months, will continue from now on."

Last month, road transport and highway ministry explained that the validity of fitness, driving licenses, registrations, etc. that could not be extended because of the lockdown and have terminated on February 1 or will lapse by June 30, will be treated valid till June 30.

From next month onwards, Pune RTO will also begin to renew licenses that have expired and also issue duplicate licenses and make corrections to the existing once.

But other works, such as issuing of permits, duplicate licenses, modifications to the vehicle owner details, etc. are being carried out by the RTO in Pimpri Chinchwad, which came out of the red zone recently.

A senior Pune RTO officer said, "We receive a letter on Tuesday from the transport commissioner stating that RTO's in red zones won't conduct any other work apart from registration of new vehicles."
