Pune, 22nd May 2026: The use of AI-enabled ‘Ray-Ban Meta’ smart glasses during an engineering examination at Symbiosis International University has triggered concern over the growing use of advanced technology in academic malpractice.
Two students of Symbiosis Institute of Technology were found wearing the smart glasses during the examination, prompting immediate action from university authorities.
The incident was noticed by exam supervisors, who identified that the glasses were equipped with camera and artificial intelligence (AI) features. The device is capable of capturing photos and videos and can potentially be used for accessing AI-based assistance during examinations.
While the university has not found any evidence so far that the students used the device for cheating, officials treated the matter seriously because of the capabilities of the smart glasses. Both students have been temporarily barred from appearing for examinations pending the outcome of the inquiry.
The matter has been referred to the institution’s Unfair Means Committee for investigation. After the inquiry, the report will be submitted to the university-level committee, which will decide the next course of action.
Pro-Vice Chancellor and Principal Director Dr. Vidya Yeravdekar said the university will hear the students’ side before taking a final decision. She said further action would depend on the findings of the inquiry committee.
