Pune, 10th September 2026: Advocate Pradeep Naik, a lawyer practising in the Bombay High Court, has served a legal notice to Vidyanand Bapat over alleged derogatory and objectionable remarks about Hindu deities, Ganeshotsav, Hindu religious traditions and Lord Ganesha. The notice follows Bapat’s public opposition to DJ sound systems used during Ganeshotsav celebrations.
His views and comments during an interview have recently circulated widely on social media. Naik has demanded that Bapat submit a written clarification and issue an unconditional apology within 48 hours of receiving the notice. The notice warns that failure to provide a satisfactory response within the given period could lead to criminal proceedings and other legal action.
Naik said he has no objection to people expressing their views on issues such as noise pollution, loudspeakers, processions or public celebrations, provided such views are expressed lawfully and respectfully. However, he argued that freedom of expression does not give anyone the right to insult religious beliefs or revered deities.
The notice also states that while exercising constitutional rights, individuals should avoid statements that deliberately hurt the religious sentiments of others.
Naik said that if Bapat fails to respond to the notice, he will approach the Pune Police Commissioner and seek registration of a case against him over the alleged remarks.
Naik added that he has no objection to Bapat's personal beliefs, including his being an atheist, or to his constitutional rights. However, he said that people in public life and public spaces should also consider the sentiments and expectations of others.
Naik further remarked that if Bapat finds religious beliefs so troublesome, he should go and live in the Amazon rainforest and express his atheism there among the animals.
