Pune: Yerawada Bridge now open for traffic

Pune: The repair work of the parallel bridge adjacent to the historic Bundgarden Bridge at Yerawada has been completed and will be reopened after span of three months.

The Traffic movement have commenced finally from Tuesday. The British-era bridge was built over the Mula-Mutha river 150 years ago. However, considering its old age structures and keeping in mind that the bridge was a bit dangerous for traffic movement, it was closed for traffic and was been gardened and turned into a walking plaza.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has built a parallel bridge near the bridge. The PMC authorities had decided to repair the bridge as it was also dangerous and risk for traffic for its repair work and Rs 3.93 crore was sanctioned for bridge.

The repair work of the bridge began in March this year and the traffic on the bridge was prohibited. The work was suspended amid the coronavirus pandemic. However, in June, repair work was carried out on the war footing.  Finally, the repair work of the bridge was completed and from Tuesday the traffic on the bridge was resumed.

"The re-opening of the bridge to traffic will reduce traffic congestion and make it easier to travel to the city for commuters." said Jagdish Khanore, superintendent engineer of the project.

After completing the work of the bridge a letter was given to the traffic department that there is was no problem in re-starting the bridge from July 7.  Somnath Padsalkar, Assistant Inspector of Police, Yerawada Transport Department, said "The bridge has been opened for traffic as the Municipal Corporation has received a letter to start traffic on the bridge.”
