Residents irked by bad roads, traffic

PUNE: The residents of the Pune Cantonment constituency are bogged down with the basic infrastructure problems like roads, cleanliness and traffic congestion.

Areas such as Bund Garden, Golibar Maidan, Bhavani Peth, Camp, Wanawadi bazaar, Central Building and Netaji Nagar come under Pune Cantonment. The residents of Camp, MG Road and Bhavani Peth are unhappy with the narrow roads and potholes on the roads.

The regular traffic jams at MG Road, Babajan Chowk and Shivaji Market continue to irk the residents of the Camp area.

However, the residents had a breather since the sitting Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Dilip Kamble carried out various development works like Ghorpadi flyover, Lulla Nagar flyover and land for Metro railway station.

Manjett Singh Virddi, a resident of the East Street, said, “The roads of Camp area are in extremely bad condition and the pothole-ridden roads are very dangerous for the commuters. The repair work is done here every now and then, however, the condition of roads continues to be pathetic.”

“In the Cantonment area, even today, rules of the British age are being followed and we do not get any facilities from the PMC. The MG Road near Aurora Towers is in terrible condition. There are hardly any facilities in the area like swimming pool, sports ground and public toilets,” said Wahid Bujabani, a resident of Juna Modikhana in Camp.

Another resident of Bhavani Peth, Chandru Mirwani, said, “There is a problem of the proper drainage system in Bhavani Peth area and there are many narrow roads here. The illegal encroachments on these narrow roads cause traffic congestion near Babajan Chowk.”

”The solid waste management and cleanliness are extremely poor in the Cantonment area. Due to increasing encroachments, there are constant traffic jams at Jagtap Chowk, Jambulkar Chowk and other places which is extremely frustrating for the residents,” said Maithili Manakawad, a resident of Windsor Avenue, Azad Nagar in Wanawadi.
