PUNE: The Regional Transport Office (RTO) of Pune has taken action against five garbage collection vehicles of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Monday.
The vehicles were plying on road without valid permit documents.
The RTO officials have clarified that they have asked the PMC Transport Department to renew the vehicle permits.
According to Deputy RTO Sanjeev Bhor, “The vehicles have been seized and kept at Phule Nagar Regional Transport Office ground. The special squad has taken action at Yerawada. However, around 300 such vehicles are still plying on the road. We have informed the PMC transport authority about it.”
The action was taken after a written complaint filed by Maharashtra Vahtuk Sena (Shiv Sena) Pune district head Eknath Dhole on Monday.
“Around 890 garbage collection vehicles of PMC are plying on the roads. Out of these, only 530 vehicles have a valid passing certificate of RTO. These vehicles got passing documents from Regional Transport Office in 1998, none after that. Most of the vehicles are plying without headlights, indicators, with poor tyre conditions, speed governance etc. The RTO has not taken action against them,” he said.
Speaking to Sakal Times, Nitin Udas, Head of PMC Vehicle Department, said they have set a target to pass maximum vehicles till March.
“We have 1,300 garbage carrying vehicles. We have done RTO passing of 450 vehicles so far. We are doing the rest on a priority basis,” said Udas.
“We have set a target to pass maximum vehicles by the end of March. As per law, every heavy vehicle has to pass from RTO after two years. It is a continuous process,” he said.
“One vehicle takes around 20 days to compile norms for RTO passing. It is not practical to keep 100 vehicles for passing in a month. Right now, we are sending 20 vehicles per month for RTO passing,” Udas added.
PLYING WITHOUT PERMIT
- Around 300 PMC garbage vehicles running without valid permits, claim RTO officials.
- After 1998, no new garbage vehicle was brought to RTO for passing.

- PMC to take up this issue on priority, to ensure maximum vehicles get valid permits by end of March.
