Pune: The Sassoon General Hospital (SGH) in Pune has started a new Co2 laser treatment in its dermatology department to treat patients with different types of scars and birthmarks on the skin. Many people from different socio-economic background visit the department to get the scars removed which inspired the hospital to bring the advanced technology to treat them.
Dr Aarti Salunke, a Dermatologist at Sassoon General Hospital, said that earlier the hospital was using conventional method, which required hospitalisation.
“But now with this Co2 laser technique, the patient will be discharged within an hour. Also, it will be done for free. With the conventional method, we could remove the scars only 20 per cent, but with the advanced technique, even 80 per cent scar removal is possible,” said Salunke.
Advanced cosmetic procedures like platelet-rich plasma therapy for chronic non-healing ulcers, scars, hair loss and others like microdermabrasion, chemical peeling for facial rejuvenation, ageing, acne scars, hyperpigmentation, chemical cautery and radiofrequency cautery for removal of warts, skin tags and intralesional injections for keloids and alopecia areata are conducted routinely at the department.
However, the doctors informed that now these procedures can be performed with more efficiency as the technology used is new.
“There are many who come daily for these kinds of procedures. Today, if you have some scar on your face, it affects the patient mentally and in that case, this technique will help even patients from economically challenged families to avail these services,” said Salunke.
Another doctor from the hospital highlighted that nowadays skin rejuvenation is not a luxury but a necessity for every individual.
“Hence these facilities will benefit individuals from all socioeconomic strata. Diagnosis and treatment for fungal infections, leprosy, skin biopsy, skin smears, stains and counselling for sexually transmitted infections (STI) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a part of the daycare procedures at the department,” said the doctor.
