Pune: Hundreds of residents from Wagholi, Chandan Nagar, Wadgaonsheri, Viman Nagar and Kalyani Nagar held a silent march on Sunday morning to highlight the issue of frequent accidents on Pune-Nagar Road. The march started from Wadgaonsheri Phata and ended at Shastri Nagar Chowk.

During the march, residents paid tribute to the victims and also vowed to follow traffic rules. The residents also gave a memorandum to local representatives to take some measures to avoid accidents.

Citing the poor safety measures on the road for pedestrians and motorists alike, Deepak Mohite, a resident from Wagholi, said, “There is no foot-over-bridge or subways for pedestrians to cross the road. Earlier also, we had sent letters to the local representatives but to no avail. Thus, to highlight our issue, we organised the silent march.” As many as 1,039 accidents have taken place so far in this year while 913 took place in 2016, he added.

Mohite, along with other residents Shailesh Gajjal, Abhijit Dhanorkar, Ajay Darwatkar, Prashant Chavan, Sachin Gholap, Prashant Brenkal, Nilesh Brenkal, Satish Boga, Rahul Dhasal, Rahul Potdar, Santosh Sawant, Dhanaji Gholap and Abhishek Kamble, participated in the march.
