SPPU gets pro vice-chancellor after ten years

Pune: After ten years, Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has got a pro vice-chancellor, as NS Umarani, Principal of Garware College of Commerce, has been appointed to the position by the Governor of Maharashtra Ch Vidyasagar Rao.

For the past one decade, this position had remained vacant. As per the new Maharashtra University Act, 2016, it is mandatory to appoint a pro vice-chancellor in every university. Two months ago, Vice-Chancellor of SPPU Nitin Karmalkar had sent names of a few candidates eligible for the post.

Umarani hails from Bhandar Kawate village in Solapur district. He has worked as an accountant in the accounts department of AIR, Mumbai, for five years. Later, he taught accountancy at BP Sulakhe College of Commerce in Barshi while he served for 14 years at Shri Shahu Mandir College.

For past ten years, Umrani had been the principal Garware College of
Commerce.

Speaking to Sakal Times, Umrani expressed happiness on his appointment. “I am hopeful that my experience will contribute to the betterment of the university,” he said.

While Umrani refused to give further details on his appointment, he said that he will give an update in due course of time.
