PUNE: The Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has added another feather to its hat by securing the first position among traditional universities in the country, according to Times Higher Education (THE) Ranking Framework.

The university has also jumped to sixth rank in the country among all the Indian universities and institutes and has obtained a reputed position among the top universities in the world ranked between 501 and 600 by taking a stride of almost 200 points.

The top five universities above the SPPU are the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, three IITs and the JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research, Mysore.

THE ranking framework ranks the universities worldwide based on their performances in the main categories of teaching, research, knowledge dissemination and international awareness, among others. Accordingly, a list of colleges with first 1,000 ranks is declared.

The SPPU has been participating in this since 2016. For the past three years (2016, 2017 and 2018), the SPPU’s performance has been ascending.

It was among the universities ranked between 601 and 800 till now. Achieving a great feat this year, the university has been placed among those between 501 and 600 in the rankings released for 2019.

The university has scored the best in the parameters of Research, Citation, and Income through Enterprise in these rankings.

Interestingly, in the rankings declared by the National Institutional Ranking Framework this year, the SPPU had secured the ninth rank.

“Crossing an important milestone in global rankings is very challenging. We have accomplished one challenge by taking a stride to the group of 501 to 600 rankings. Now, the next challenge is to be recognised among the top 500 Universities in the world, and I am glad that we are working in the right direction to achieve that goal. The new rankings have also added to the responsibility of SPPU,” Dr Nitin Karmalkar, Vice-Chancellor, SPPU, said.
