SPPU’s Dept of Sociology holds language workshop

PUNE: In the age of globalisation, students of sociology needs to be more prepared with their language skills. In a bid to improve and polish the Marathi language skills among students, Department of Sociology at SPPU had organised a six-day workshop at the varsity.

“As sociology is a study of development, structure, and functioning of human society, it is necessary that students understand the language used in a particular community to interact with them,” said Shruti Tambe, head of sociology at SPPU.

“Due to lack of proper language skill, students of sociology face difficulty in editing and research work. Since students lack command over a particular language, they fail to comment on the problems and challenges of the community. Moreover, since there is a limited source of income in this field, it is necessary to modulate the income opportunities according to needs of present generation and community,” said Tambe.

Hence, the department has organised Marathi improvement workshop.

Arun Phadke, an orthography expert, conducted this six-day workshop and interacted with students there. During his session, he explained about grammar, types of sentences, structure and layout of words, necessity of selecting a appropriate verb and its usage. “We can understand the language used in a book or any article while reading them and even point out mistakes in it.

Similarly, one can apply the same methods while self-writing an article,” said Phadke.
