Pune:  An organisation, Shivaji Raigad Smarak Mandal, has decided to conduct sessions on the Modi script, which was used by the Maratha empire.

The mandal will be holding sessions from November 2 to December 17 at Tilak Smarak Mandir, Sadashiv Peth.

The Modi script involves more than 5 crore documents and manuscripts, which are 700 years old. The script includes Shiv Kalin Modi script of the 16th century, Peshwai Modi script of the 17th century and British Modi script.

Pandurang Balkavde, member of the mandal, said, “We have selected 50,000 documents from five crore scripts, each participant will be given a 200 to 300 word script. They will be taught to read and write by translating the scripts and making a 100-word brief copy.

Ramesh Jagtap, Assistant Director of Pune Archives, said, “These documents and manuscripts include business documents and personal memorandums of Shivaji era, Bajirao era, Dnyaneshwar era and much more. Only the scholars or researchers come here and make the necessary translations. If anyone needs these documents, our translator will interpret it for them.”
