PUNE: The unhygienic condition in school toilets may cost the principals of municipal schools their jobs. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has issued directives to PMC school board to hold principals of municipal schools responsible for unhygienic toilets 

in schools.  This issue was discussed during the Standing Committee meeting held on Tuesday. The committee members highlighted this issue of unhygienic toilets in PMC schools. During the discussion, they decided to put the onus of unhygienic toilets on the principals. 

PMC Standing Committee member Deepak Pote said, “The responsibility will be fixed on the school principal. He or she has to make sure that school toilets are clean and maintained. A cleaning timetable has to be maintained and followed. The civic officials will do a survey at regular intervals. If any of these toilets are found to be unsatisfactory, strict action will be taken.” 

He further said, “The responsibility of repairing has been fixed on principals. If they fail to do so, they will have to face strict action such as suspension.” 

PMC school administration officer Shivaji Daundkar said, “There are more than 2,000 toilets in schools. Right now, the corporation has given a contract to clean schools toilets. Every year, corporation spend Rs 2 cr for this.”
