Urological surgery on 10-yr-old succesful at Sassoon Hospital

Pune: A complex urological surgery of a 10-year-old girl was carried out recently at Sassoon General Hospital which helped the girl in urinary continence i.e. the ability to prevent accidental leakage of urine from the bladder.

Doctors at the hospital mentioned that upon investigations, the girl was found to have duplex kidneys on the left side. This is a complex congenital anomaly seen in one per cent of children. In this anomaly, one or both the kidneys have double ureters that is more than one urine draining tubes.

With this problem, the young girl faced a lot of problems at school as her medical condition affected her studies. The ureter draining the upper portion of the left kidney was opening ectopically into the vagina, leading to her symptoms.

Dr Minakshi Nalbale-Bhosale, Paediatric Surgeon at SGH said that because of the gross dilatation of the ureter, the surgery was very challenging.

The girl was critical for first 48 hours after the surgery but has recovered well.

"The surgery was successful and has helped her. Such complex surgeries give us tremendous job satisfaction and are the incentive for us while working at the busy government hospital set up," said Dr Bhosale.

Moreover, the kidney and the ureter were filled with pus. This ureter was grossly dilated to four to five centimetres in diameter. She underwent a complex surgical procedure to disconnect the ectopically draining ureteric opening into the vagina and to create a new opening into the urinary bladder.

Under the guidance of Dean of SGH Dr Ajay Chandanwale and Dr Dasmit Singh, Dr Bhosale along with Dr Jayesh Desale successfully performed the complex surgery.

Others who were a part of the team were Dr Rohan Rathod, staff nurse Anita Anthony and Manisha Gholve.
