Wagholi residents protest over poor condition of road

ST CORRESPONDENT

Pune: Over 300 residents of different societies on the Ivy Estate Road in Wagholi staged a protest against the government authorities for dillydallying the approach road construction work on Sunday. The residents are demanding the construction of the road following several accidents. Armed with placards, the residents demanded immediate intervention from the government authorities on the issue.

Arijit Chatterjee, a resident of Ivy Botanica, said that the road has not been developed since ages and residents have to struggle to reach their homes. “There are about 3,000 families residing in these societies and hence government authorities should provide us with proper road facility,” added Chatterjee.

Ram Dabhade, former sarpanch of the Wagholi Gram Panchayat, said that the road is about 800 metres in length and 50 metres wide. “It would cost about Rs 1 crore if we are planning to build a tar road and Rs 2 crore if we are planning for a concrete road. The Gram Panchayat has written to PMRDA on Friday to provide a NOC and we are expecting the NOC soon. Once the NOC is provided, we will take the next step,” added Dabhade.

The former sarpanch said that in the past few months, there have been several accidents, which are affecting senior citizens and women. “On Sunday, the residents had planned for temporary repair of the road, however, as around 80 ft area of the road is under litigation, it led to a chaotic situation,” added Dabhade. Police officials of Lonikand police station were called at the spot to maintain law and order situation. The residents are expecting an immediate solution so that there are no further accidents. “We are following the issue with the Gram Panchayat, PMRDA and our builders but have not made any progress,” added Chatterjee.
