PUNE: A 30-year-old woman was allegedly cheated of her gold ornaments by a 46-year-old man claiming he could help resolve her differences with her husband.

The Vishrambaug police station has arrested the accused, who has been identified as Lokesh Diwekar, a resident of Aundh. Police suspect that he had duped several women in similar fashion.

According to the police, the incident took place between March and April this year at Swami Samarth Math and Khandoba Temple near Sarasbaug.

The accused met the woman at the temple and told her to bring some ornaments, which have been touched by her husband. The woman gave him some gold and silver ornaments, totally worth Rs 1.09 lakh, wrapped in a handkerchief. He asked her to perform some rituals at the temple for 8 days and then unwrap the handkerchief.

When she unwrapped the handkerchief, the ornaments were replaced with two lemons and one ring. When the accused did not return the ornaments, she registered a complaint with the police.

Assistant Inspector Bapu Raikar is further investigating the case.
