Woman injured severely by manja

ST CORRESPONDENT

Pune: In yet another incident, a woman sustained severe neck injuries after a stray nylon manja, a thread used for flying kites, entangled around her neck while she was pillion riding on a bike. The incident took place on DP Road on January 15.

Seed Infotech’s Head of Global Certifications Priya Shende said she would have died if the vehicle was moving at high speed.

“I was going to a relative’s house for haldi-kumkum programme. My niece was driving the two-wheeler. I suddenly felt pain on the neck and on feeling my neck, I found manja and blood. My niece rushed me to the hospital and I survived,” said Shende, a resident of Kothrud.

The incident has once again brought the incidence of sale of manja in limelight. Though Pune police have taken action against some vendors, they have failed to enforce a ban on its sale in the city as has been reported by Sakal Times in the last two weeks.

Last year, Sakal employee Suvarna Mujumdar and Dr Kripali Nikam died after being injured by manja while riding their two-wheelers.
