Workshop on Ancient Indian Mathematics will be organised by SPPU from tomorrow

Pune: A workshop on Ancient Indian Mathematics has been organised at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) under the Lokmanya Tilak Chair. The interdisciplinary workshop has been organised in cooperation with Mathematics and Sanskrit Departments of SPPU and Bhaskaracharya Pratishthana, Pune. 

The workshop will be held from August 1 to 14 and lectures will be held from 4 pm to 6.15 pm except on Sundays at the virtual classroom, lecture hall complex, near the Mathematics Department, SPPU.
The workshop will be inaugurated by Nitin Karmalkar, Vice-Chancellor of SPPU. Prof Saroja Bhate, Prof SG Dani (Mumbai), Prof MS Sriram (Chennai), Prof SA Katre, Prof GU Thite, Dr Venketeswar Pai, Dr Mugdha Gadgil will be the speakers.

The lectures will be beneficial to Mathematics and Sanskrit teachers and students and who are interested in ancient Sanskrit scientific literature. The speakers will quote and explain the verses from the original Sanskrit texts of Aryabhata (476–550 CE), Sridharacharya (c. 750 CE – c. 930 CE), Mahaveeracharya (9th Century) and Bhaskaracharya (1114–1185). There will be lectures on Bodhayana Shulbasutras (c. 800 - c.600 BC), which are same as the Pythagoras Theorem.

Another highlight of the workshop is to bring forward two less known and important parts of Siddhanta Shiromani of Bhaskaracharya viz Grahadhyaya and Goladhyaya.

The workshop is open to all. A live telecast of the lectures will be available from webcast@unipune.ac.in or from main page of university website unipune.ac.in.

“The workshop has been funded under the joint programmes of The National Academy of Sciences, India, and The Mathematics Consortium,” said Prof. Katre, Chair Professor, Lokmanya Tilak Chair.
