PUNE: An 18-year-old youth rescued a girl, who wanted to commit suicide, by jumping into Mutha river from SM Joshi bridge on Monday evening.

Samir Shaikh, a resident of Bavdhan, was riding his bike when he saw the 20-year-old girl jumping off from the bridge. Without wasting time, Shaikh also jumped and brought her out safely.

According to the police, the girl hails from Panvel and is in the third-year of graduation. She was unable to cope with studies and was depressed as her friends were getting good marks. Around 5.30 pm on Monday, she jumped from the bridge. Shaikh had seen her and jumped immediately into the water to save her. A crowd had gathered at the spot. Some people went to the riverside and pulled them out. They also called the police who rushed the girl to a hospital.

Later, officials from Deccan Gymkhana police station felicitated Shaikh for his presence of mind and bravery.
