‘Animal-based farming harmful to environment’

ST CORRESPONDENT

PUNE:  Jeeva Bhavana, an organisation working against animal-based agriculture, has written an open letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi stating that animal-based agriculture has an impact on the environment.

The letter has emphasised on the need to change the animal-based agriculture to plant-based agriculture.

“Animal agriculture is the leading cause of global warming, deforestation, loss of biodiversity, species’ extinction, water depletion and so on,” the letter stated.

“India is home to nearly one-third of the world’s cattle population. Each one of these cows, bulls and buffaloes eat a tremendous amount of food, drink tremendous amount of water and produce waste, including methane, a greenhouse gas that is up to 84 times more powerful than carbon dioxide,” the letter said.

The organisation has appealed to the PM to focus on plant-based solutions and forward looking agriculture policies.
