Bihar established a new world record for the highest team total in men’s List A cricket on Wednesday, scoring 574 for 6 against Arunachal Pradesh in Ranchi. Competing at the JSCA Oval in the Vijay Hazare Trophy Plate Group, Bihar broke the previous record of 506 for 2 set by Tamil Nadu in 2022.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi, aged 14 years and 272 days, became the youngest player to score a century in men’s List A cricket during the match. Suryavanshi reached his hundred in 36 deliveries and broke AB de Villiers’ record for the fastest 150 in the format, reaching the mark in 54 balls.
He was eventually dismissed for 190 off 84 balls, including 15 sixes. Having already made an impact in the IPL and youth internationals, Suryavanshi is slated to join the India Under-19 squad for their World Cup campaign in Zimbabwe and Namibia next month.
Captain Sakibul Gani registered the fastest century by an Indian in List A cricket, reaching his hundred in 32 balls. Gani finished unbeaten on 128 from 40 deliveries, a knock that included 10 fours and 12 sixes. His 32-ball ton is the third-fastest in the world, surpassed only by Jake Fraser-McGurk and AB de Villiers.
Gani’s effort was complemented by wicketkeeper Ayush Loharuka, who contributed 116 off 56 balls, as the pair ensured Bihar maintained a run rate exceeding 11 runs per over throughout the 50 overs.
The record-breaking performances extended to Ahmedabad, where Jharkhand’s Ishan Kishan scored a 33-ball century against Karnataka. Kishan finished with 125 off 39 balls, meaning three of the four fastest List A hundreds by Indians were scored on the same afternoon across two different venues.
This surge of high-scoring innings overshadowed the domestic returns of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who were also in action for Mumbai and Delhi respectively on the same day.
Bihar’s total of 574 for 6 now stands as the highest ever recorded in the 50-over format, establishing a big lead in the Plate Group standings. The team’s scoring rate points towards a trend in the domestic circuit of higher aggression and statistical dominance in the Plate Group fixtures.
With Suryavanshi soon departing for national duty and Gani continuing the form seen during his record-breaking first-class debut, Bihar’s performance has set a new benchmark for the remainder of the 2025-26 Vijay Hazare Trophy season.
