The 24-year-old saved six match points to defeat World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in a grueling two-hour and 30-minute marathon. The 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (8) victory ends Sabalenka’s 15-match winning streak and ensures that the Madrid Open will crown a new champion this year.

Five lives at 4-5

The third group seemed destined for a screenwriter’s storyboard. Down 5–4 and staring at five match points on her own serve, Baptiste deployed a tactical repertoire that unsettled Sabalenka and left the crowd astonished.

  • Variety: Baptiste saved one match point with a serve-and-volley, another with an ace, and a third with a daring drop-shot-lob combination.

  • Scramble: In the ensuing games, Baptiste produced a scrambling get from outside the court that turned into a forehand winner, a shot Sabalenka later admitted was brave.

  • Breaker: Even in the tiebreak, Sabalenka held a sixth match point at 6-5, only for Baptiste to rattle off three straight points to seal the biggest win of her career.

Belief and adjustments:

Having lost a close match to Sabalenka in Miami just weeks ago, Baptiste went into this duel with a refined blueprint. She targeted Sabalenka’s rhythm with drop shots and frequent net approaches.

I played her a few weeks ago and it was kind of a close match. I just got broken once in each set. So I had a better idea of how to play her, and how I should play, adjustments I needed to make. So I think I just went in trying to play my game, still doing the same things that I've been doing, but I had a few adjustments I needed to make from the last time we played.

Sabalenka, admitted that a lapse in the second set, featuring two "out of nowhere" double faults handed Baptiste the belief she needed to turn the tide.

Baptiste breakthrough

  • Streak-breaker: Baptiste is only the second player to defeat Sabalenka in 2026, joining Elena Rybakina.

  • Top 10 terror: This was Baptiste's second Top 10 win of the week (after Paolini) and the fourth of her career.

  • Ranking rise: Ranked No. 88 a year ago, Baptiste is now closing in on a maiden Top 30 debut.

  • Semifinal date: She will next face 9th seed Mirra Andreeva, who dismissed Leylah Fernandez on the other side of the draw.

Hailey Baptiste showed she deserves a place among the elite. By refusing to buckle under the pressure of six match points, she outlasted the tour’s toughest competitor. Sabalenka’s Madrid campaign has ended, and the draw is now wide open for a first-time WTA 1000 champion.
