KKR vs PBKS: Shreyas Iyer brings flying kings to former home as KKR looks to register first win of the season

Winless KKR is struggling with ₹25.2 crore buy Cameron Green, not bowling. While, 2-0 Punjab Kings are favorites, leveraging a balanced top order and the spin threat of Yuzvendra Chahal.

As clouds roll in over the iconic Eden Gardens on Monday, April 6, 2026, the Kolkata Knight Riders face a tense, must-win situation. Following two consecutive losses marked by a confused batting lineup and a bowling attack that has allowed more than 220 runs in each game, the 2024 champions are drifting toward an early-season crisis.

Blocking their path is a familiar figure with a point to prove: Shreyas Iyer. The captain who guided KKR to their third title just two seasons back now returns to his old home ground as the leader of an in-form Punjab Kings side. While Kolkata appears to be in crisis mode, Punjab is gathering momentum, coming in with a flawless 2-0 record and a top order that looks stable and intimidating.

INR 25.2 crore question

The spotlight remains fixed on Cameron Green. Acquired for a record fee, the Australian all-rounder has been the face of KKR’s early struggles. With Cricket Australia yet to clear him to bowl and a string of low scores (18 and 2), Green is currently occupying a specialist batter's spot that many feel could be better utilized by the explosive Tim Seifert or Finn Allen.

Heist of Mullanpur: A haunting memory

While Eden Gardens is a batting paradise (hosting the highest T20 chase of 262 in 2024), the last meeting between these two was a psychological scar for KKR. In 2025, Punjab defended a mere 111 runs, the lowest total ever defended in IPL history, leaving KKR bowled out for 95.

Yuzvendra Chahal continues to be the Kings’ premier leg-spinner. He boasts an outstanding record against KKR’s seasoned batters, having removed Ajinkya Rahane four times while giving away only 46 runs. If the Eden Gardens pitch shows even a fraction of the grip seen in recent daytime matches, Chahal could transform the chasing conditions into a minefield for the opposition.

New Zealand connection

KKR’s management is reportedly weighing a reunion of the Finn Allen–Tim Seifert opening partnership. The pair has happy memories at Eden Gardens, where they dismantled South Africa in the T20 World Cup semi-final at this very ground just last month.

  • Sacrifice: Selecting Seifert would almost certainly require dropping Cameron Green, a decision that would amount to a major acknowledgment that their high-priced auction signing was a misstep.

  • PBKS blueprint: Shreyas Iyer is likely to remain in the side without any changes. With Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh delivering explosive starts and Vijaykumar Vyshak executing clinically at the death, the Kings appear to have found the balance that KKR are still trying to achieve.

Eden showdown

  • Shreyas’s return: This is the first time Shreyas Iyer leads an opposing team at Eden Gardens since his departure from KKR.

  • 220+ trend: KKR’s bowlers have leaked over 220 runs in both their losses this season, with Varun Chakravarthy struggling for control.

  • Vyshak’s rise: Under-the-radar pacer Vijaykumar Vyshak already has 5 wickets this season, with three coming in the crucial death-over phase.

  • Chasing ground: Despite the light rain, the toss will still be crucial. Eden Gardens is among the most favorable venues for chasing, particularly with dew likely to make the ball extremely difficult for spinners to grip.

Kolkata Knight Riders are already on the back foot before the season has truly taken shape. Their dependence on flashes of individual brilliance from Raghuvanshi or Rinku Singh only highlights the absence of a reliable, leading figure in their bowling attack. For Punjab, the focus is on maintaining their upward momentum. If they can withstand the early New Zealand onslaught from Allen and Seifert, the Kings will be well positioned to inflict a third consecutive home defeat on KKR.
