Alcaraz and Sinner sprint into Monte Carlo round of 16 with Carlos admitting, losing No. 1 position "inevitable"

Sinner who comes back on a 36 set winning streak into the clay season, is currently positioned to potentially overtake Alcaraz for the World No. 1 ranking during this 2026 clay swing.

The shift from hard courts to Monaco’s red clay has posed no problems for the world’s top players. During a Tuesday session attended by sprint icon Usain Bolt, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner treated the Monte Carlo Country Club like their own private track, dominating their rivals to move into the Round of 16.

The day was as much about the present as it was about the looming hierarchy of the PIF ATP Rankings. While Alcaraz began his title defense with a clinical dismissal of Sebastian Baez, he admitted that the rise of the "untouchable" Sinner makes a change at the top of the world rankings feel "inevitable."

Sinner’s streak: 36 consecutive sets

Jannik Sinner arrived in Monte Carlo fresh off a historic "Sunshine Double" (Indian Wells and Miami) where he didn't drop a single set. On Tuesday, he extended that ruthless efficiency to clay, dispatching Frenchman Ugo Humbert 6-3, 6-0 in just 64 minutes.

After a cautious opening in which Sinner worked to find his rhythm, the Italian rediscovered his trademark power, dropping only six points in a second-set shutout. The victory marks Sinner’s 18th straight win at the Masters 1000 level and stretches his record to 36 consecutive sets claimed at this tier.

Alcaraz: "I surprised myself"

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz had not competed on clay since his five-set thriller against Sinner at Roland Garros last July. Despite the layoff, the Spaniard barraged past Sebastian Baez 6-1, 6-3, needing only five minutes longer than Sinner to secure his victory.

Alcaraz broke the six-time clay-court champion five times, utilizing his heavy forehand to dictate play. Despite a minor stutter in the second set, Alcaraz won the final seven points of the match to surge into the next round.

To be honest, I surprised myself with the level. I thought I was going to play a little bit worse, I would say, but I’m just happy with everything I’ve done today. Maybe a couple of things I didn’t do well in the second set. I let him get into the match, but overall, I’m just happy to play matches again on clay.

Battle for no. 1: Inevitable change?

The sub-plot of the week remains the ranking points. Because Sinner missed the start of the 2025 clay season and has no points to defend in Monte Carlo, any progress he makes adds to his tally. Conversely, Alcaraz is defending a bunch of points as the reigning champion.

Alcaraz was candid about the situation, noting that even if he defends his title, Sinner is likely to claim the World No. 1 spot in the coming weeks. For Sinner, the goal remains his first-ever ATP Masters 1000 title on clay.

Monte Carlo swing

  • Injury fallout: Roberto Bautista Agut was forced to retire while trailing Matteo Berrettini, setting up a high-stakes second-round clash between Berrettini and Daniil Medvedev.

  • Berrettini's top 100 battle: If the former World No. 6 fails to progress further, he risks dropping out of the Top 100 for the first time in two years.

  • Next opponents: Sinner will face either Francisco Cerundolo or Tomas Machac, while Alcaraz awaits the winner of Tomas Martin Etcheverry and Terence Atmane.

The Monte Carlo draw is seeded for a dream final between Alcaraz and Sinner. On current evidence, both players have navigated the "tacky" early-season clay with ease. Sinner’s form is a machine-like carryover from the hard courts, while Alcaraz’s natural affinity for the dirt remains his greatest asset. As the clay swing ignites, the No. 1 ranking is no longer a question of if, but when.
