Mumbai: Ruffina with David Allan in the saddle got the better of the overconfident jockeys and won the Indian 1000 Guineas at Mahalakshmi Race Course here on Sunday.

The Dallas Todywalla-trained, Ruffina surged ahead at the 400 metres marker and kicked on to win by 2 1/2 from Clymene and outclass the field in record timing that superceded 30-year-old record. The winner is owned by Dr Cyrus Poonawalla, Adar Poonawalla and Natasha Poonawalla of Villoo Poonawalla Racing and Breeding Pvt Ltd.
