Premier League to return on June 17 with Manchester City vs Arsenal

The Premier League plans to resume on June 17, with the first two fixtures to be played by Aston Villa v Sheffield United and Manchester City v Arsenal.

A statement was released on Thursday evening, saying "a new provisional restart date for the 2019/20 season of Wednesday, June 17."

It will start with Aston Villa v Sheffield United and Manchester City v Arsenal held on June 17, which was postponed due to the Carabao Cup final, followed by a full match round starting on Friday, June 19.

"But this date cannot be confirmed until we have met all the safety requirements needed, as the health and welfare of all participants and supporters are our priority," said Richard Masters, Premier League Chief Executive. 

"Sadly, matches will have to take place without fans in stadiums, so we are pleased to have come up with a positive solution for supporters to be able to watch all the remaining 92 matches."

The statement also said that the matches would be held behind closed doors, due to COVID-19. 

The statement also confirmed that all 92 matches will be broadcast live in the UK by Current rights holders Sky Sports, BT Sport, BBC Sport and Amazon Prime, will broadcast the remaining games. The BBC is showing four of the games; the first top-flight matches are shown on free-to-air TV since 1992.

"The Premier League and our clubs are proud to have incredibly passionate and loyal supporters. It is important to ensure as many people as possible can watch the matches at home," said Richard.

All 20 Premier League clubs agreed on that decision at a meeting on Thursday.
