Saina storms into quarters as seeds fall by the wayside

AURANGABAD: Pune’s Saina Deshpande punched above her weight to score 6-3, 6-3 win over the tenth seeded Saumrita Verma of Uttar Pradesh and made it to the quarterfinals of the MSLTA- Yonex Sunrise Under-14 National tennis tournament being played at Endurance Marathwada-MSLTA tennis Center at the Divisional Sports Complex here on Wednesday.

On a day when eight upset results were recorded, the ninth standard student of the Vikhe Patil Memorial School, Saina, stepped up her game and scored the important win in the girls section.

Girls top seed Chandni Shrinivasan of Telangana was the major casualty as Maharashtra’s Madhurima Sawant sent her packing with 6-1, 6-0 win. The other seeded player to fall early was No 3 seed Riya Sachdeva of Delhi as she lost to Punjab’s Sahira Singh 6-2, 6-4.

Then, No 9 seed Pari Chavan accounted for seventh seeded Saumya Ronde of Telangana 6-4, 6-0 and 12th seeded Amodini Naik of Karnataka shocked No 5 seed Samiksha Dabas 6-2, 7-6 (9-7) to move into the last eight stage.

VAIBHAV SRIRAM SHOCKS TOP SEED
In the boys section, unseeded Vaibhav Sriram of Maharashtra scored an upset win over top seeded Vansh Nandal of Haryana 3-6, 6-1, 7-5. In other shock results, Delhi’s Adhiri Awal beat No 4 seed Vitin Rathee of Haryana 6-2, 6-2 and Pune’s Siddharth Marathe pulled off a 6-2, 6-2 win over No 9 seed Skandha Rao of Karnataka.
