Top seeded Deniz bites dust in second round

PUNE: Top seed from Israel was shown the exit door by Thai Bunyawi Thamchaiwat in straight sets as the $25,000 Pune Open ITF Women’s tennis Championship saw upheaval on the third day that saw wildcard Zeel Desai stay on in the face of stiff challenge, at the MSLTA School of Tennis in Balewadi Sports Complex on Wednesday.

Number 3 Seed Kamran Kaur Thandi, the only Indian to be seeded also progressed into the quarterfinals after scoring 6-3, 6-3 win over Stefanie Tan of Singapore.

In the second round match, unseeded Thamchaiwat upset Khazaniuk 6-3, 6-1 in an hour and 27 minutes to make it to the quarterfinals.

Too Indian players, Karman Kaur and Zeel also cruised into the quarterfinals as Karman outplayed Stefanie Tan in an hour and 35 minutes, while in a battle of wildcards Zeel Desai the highest ranked Indian edged out Mihika Yadav 7-5,7-5 in 1 hour and 58 minutes.

In another upset Switzerland’s Karin Kennel upset fifth seeded Pei-Chi Lee of Taipei 7-6 (7-2), 6-1.

In matches featuring Indians second seeded Jaqueline Adina Cristian of Romania Stopped a fighting Rutuja Bhosale 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and 29 minutes and fourth seeded Valeriya Strakhova of Ukraine staved off a second set challenge from former national champion Sai Samhitha Chamarthi before winning 6-3, 7-5.
