Amid the ongoing AI photo generation trend, Google's Gemini AI chatbot app has reached the top spot on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store charts in India. This accomplishment comes after the launch of the tech giant's Nano Banana image-editing AI model, which has sparked a new viral trend of AI-generated images on social media.
The Gemini app's rapid ascent in the charts is due to a sudden increase in popularity from Google’s Nano Banana AI model, reportedly used to edit over 500 million images since its debut last month.
According to a report by 9to5 Google, the Gemini app for iPhone is also the leading free app in the US App Store. It ranks second in Canada and the United Kingdom. Between August 26 and September 9, the Gemini app reportedly gained over 23 million new users.
Earlier this year, ChatGPT experienced a similar rise in downloads after its image-generation update led to the popular ‘Ghibli AI trend’ on social media. Gemini is among the few AI chatbot apps, alongside DeepSeek, to surpass OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which has long led app store charts worldwide.
The Gemini viral trend focuses on Google’s new Nano Banana AI model, allowing users to upload multiple photos and create new images in specific styles or seamlessly edited to feature a famous celebrity.
This feature enables the generation or editing of up to 100 images per day for free. However, Nano Banana allows the generation or editing of 1,000 images for Gemini AI Pro or Ultra subscribers.
