The artificial intelligence boom is at an all-time high, and India is leading the charge in GenAI education. A recent Coursera report reveals that the country has recorded an impressive 3.6 million enrollments this year alone, the highest in the world.
As major tech firms increase their investments in AI and India strives to position itself as a global center for talent, the report bolsters the country's aspirations. The Coursera report highlighted two courses that have gained popularity among Indian students: Google's Introduction to Generative AI and DeepLearning.AI's AI for Everyone.
In 2025, Google Cloud's Introduction to Generative AI is recognized as the leading GenAI course in the nation. This course is crafted as a beginner-friendly specialization, providing learners with a basic comprehension of generative AI models, their applications, and practical uses. It is concise and presented in an easy-to-understand format, making it popular among newcomers to AI who seek clarity before delving into more complex technical areas.
As per Coursera, this course tops the list of the ten most popular GenAI programs in India this year, outpacing the IBM, AWS, and Google AI Essentials courses. “India’s learning momentum is extraordinary, reinforcing why the country sits at the heart of Coursera’s mission,” said Ashutosh Gupta, Managing Director, India and Asia Pacific, Coursera. With a young, ambitious workforce and a growing digital economy, India is well-positioned to lead in the AI era, but this requires rapid, large-scale skilling. Coursera is committed to providing accessible, job-aligned learning to help India seize this opportunity.
"AI for Everyone," led by Andrew Ng, remains the most popular GenAI course in India, resonating with non-technical professionals navigating the AI transition. According to the report, 95% of Indian learners saw career growth, with 50% experiencing salary increases and 96% gaining confidence and personal development. These insights highlight why India is Coursera's second-largest learner community, with over 32.8 million users.
The report also identifies key growth areas: AI workflows, prompt engineering, data storytelling, digital resilience, and change management. India's top courses reflect a focus on AI fundamentals, data literacy, digital marketing, and cybersecurity, with industry-backed credentials like Google, IBM, and Stanford leading the way. This shows that Indian learners are prioritizing foundational skills over trends."
