Netflix Now Requires a Unique Email ID for Every Profile Login: Here's What It Means for Users

The streaming platform's latest policy change is being framed as a convenience upgrade, but it also quietly makes account sharing harder.

If you share a Netflix account with family members, you may have already noticed a new prompt asking each profile to link its own email address. It is not a glitch. Beginning June 15, 2026, Netflix began rolling out a permanent policy requiring nearly every profile under a subscription to be linked to its own unique email address.

The change is significant, and how it affects you depends entirely on how your household uses the platform.

What Has Changed, Exactly?

For years, Netflix accounts have allowed multiple profiles under a single login, with all of them tied to the account owner's email address. Sign-in credentials and account-level communications funnelled through a single person, the primary account holder. Under the updated system, each profile within a household can now be linked to its own unique email address.

Children's profiles are exempt and can continue operating without a dedicated email address.

Netflix says the new system is designed to make account management more convenient. By linking a profile to a unique email address, users can sign in independently and receive verification codes directly, eliminating the need to rely on the primary account holder.

The update gives profile users more control over their individual Netflix experience

Users can now:

  • Manage their own language, subtitle, audio and display settings independently.

  • Make changes without affecting other profiles on the same account.

  • Receive more personalised recommendations, as Netflix can better tailor suggestions to an individual's viewing habits.

What this means For Shared Accounts

The new email requirement is also part of Netflix's broader effort to curb account sharing, following its password-sharing crackdown that began in 2023. By linking each profile to a separate email address, Netflix gains greater visibility into who is using an account and makes it more difficult for profiles to be shared informally between people living in different locations.

The change builds on Netflix's existing household verification system, which already relies on IP addresses, device IDs and account activity to determine whether users belong to the same primary household. The addition of unique email IDs adds another layer of accountability to that system.

Steps to Link an Email ID to Your Netflix Profile

The process is relatively straightforward and can be completed through the Netflix app or website. Users can either update their profiles through the Profile Settings menu or use the link provided in Netflix's notification email.

  • Open the Profile Settings section on Netflix.

  • Add a unique email address to each profile.

  • Alternatively, use the link included in Netflix's email notification.

  • Once an email is linked, the profile user will retain access to their account history and personalised settings.
