If your Instagram is suddenly flooded with images of people in elegant sarees, you can credit Nano Banana for that. This is the new image-editing model by Google DeepMind within the Gemini app, designed to transform a simple selfie into a cinematic portrait.
Featuring chiffon sarees, windswept hair, and movie-like settings, this AI tool has become a trendsetter for those wanting to experience their Bollywood fantasies online. However, not everyone is convinced by the trend.
Shantanu Naidu, known for his work as an aide to the late Ratan Tata, shared a humorous Instagram video mocking the trend. He finds it ironic that Indians, of all people, require an AI model to envision themselves in a saree.
He took to Instagram and posted a video joking,
"Tum log India mein ho, America mein nahi. India! The land of the saree. Tumhare kapat mein at least 15 saree hain. Itne lazy ho gaye ho tum... AI ko kapda generate karne ko bol rahe ho jo tumhare kapat mein already hai."
(You live in India, not America. This is the land of the saree. You have at least 15 sarees in your cupboard. You've become so lazy that you're asking AI to generate clothes that are already in your wardrobe!)
He also mentioned that he could comprehend if individuals were utilizing the tool for items they typically don't possess, such as white wedding dresses. However, he found it perplexing that sarees, which are a common item in most Indian closets, were causing such a fascination.
The video concluded with a humorous disclaimer, “Mai toh masti mai bolta hai” (I’m just saying this in fun), but it resonated widely. Comments poured in: “So true, finally someone said what I was thinking,” one follower wrote.
